Training Camps
The upcoming year will be the 15th season that I will be instructing Camp Cools training camps for kids all over the world. Over these years there have been multitudes of different BMXers in attendance, from young to old, with riders who are on the track for the first time, to Elite riders with Rainbow Jerseys. Due to the full spectrum of skills that I have had the pleasure of teaching, I am very confident in my abilities to help any rider or racer who is willing to listen and learn. A key element that I focus on in all of my teachings is the safety of the sport and how to ride your bicycle in the safest way, thus making racing more enjoyable for everyone.
I offer a few different options when it comes to the type of camps that I teach and am also willing to design a camp that has specific needs and wants.
Open Clinic
This camp is open to all riders of any age and of all skill levels. The duration of these camps is anywhere from 1-2 days, but will also be able to do multi-day camps as well as evening or afternoon camps. During these clinics the focus will be to build up each riders skill level and make them more comfortable on their bikes, thus instilling confidence on the track and making racing more fun and enjoyable. The skills that we will cover in great detail and then practice until the riders understand and are able to perform according to their skill are:
-Pumping for speed
-Manuelling, double manuelling, pre-manuelling
-Speed jumping
-Jumping
-Cornering
-Passing
-Track Speed
-Gates
Open camps are designed to teach and help every rider, no matter what their skill level. When going over jumps on the track, I will be describing and demonstrating how it’s done based on each individual skill level. Novice or beginner riders will be taught safety and riding in a way that makes it fun. I will also be describing and demonstrating everything from manuelling to bump jumping and everything in between for the more experienced riders.
BMX racing is more then just the physical and technical skills on the track, it’s also about 90% mental and this aspect will be covered in full detail. No matter if you are a novice racer trying to get to intermediate or if you are elite, who is trying to be the next big thing, the mental approach to racing will be covered.
Usually during two-day camps we will play a few BMX games with the kids, such as the popular “foot down”, as well as some Camp Cools specials that you will have to attend to find out. These games are usually played after our lunch break in order to warm the kids up again, and to regain their focus for the afternoon session. It also let’s the riders have some fun and joke around to break up the training of the day to help regain focus.
Training is a very important aspect of becoming a good racer, and this topic will be touched on lightly during our camps. We will discuss issues such as:
-Warming-up/Cooling-down
-Sprinting for power and speed
-Diet; what to eat during a race weekend and leading up to the race.
High Performance Clinic
A High Performance Clinic is quite similar to an open camp, in that we will be focusing on the same skills on the track. However, the main difference is that this camp is only open to mature Intermediates and Expert riders so that the intensity, skill set, and the workload are increased dramatically. More attention will be placed on executing the skills to perfection and making your skills work to attain maximum speed around the track.
My coaching approach will be more serious and demanding as I put the riders thru their paces in order to achieve the results that are desired. Athletes will make major gains by pushing themselves to their limits through repetition of different skills and constant critiquing through these sessions.
The intensity of the session on the track will require that the athletes take additional breaks in order to recover. These rest periods will allow for in-depth discussions on the mental aspects of racing as well as additional talks on dry land training. Riders will be taught proper ways to train at home including sessions on sprinting, stretching and plyometrics. Literature, in some instances, will be given out to the riders with training plans that they can do at home.
This is a demanding camp intended for riders who will train like a high performance athlete. Riders are expected to give 100 percent in order to push themselves to the next level.
Coaches Camp
Over the past 5 years I have put on Coaches Clinics for the local coaches, parents, wife’s/husbands or anyone desiring increased knowledge of the sport. We cover all skills on and off the track in order to teach the finer points of BMX. The information you learn will be useful in order to help your local club or even your child when out at the track. I will be handing out a training manual that will cover all the concepts that were addressed during the camp, as well as example training programs that can be put on at the track or done at home.
Specific Skills Camp
Evening skill camps will focus on a specific skill that will be addressed at each camp. An example of this would be a “gate camp”, in which the only thing we do for the entire clinic would be gates. These camps usually run from 2-3 hours and are tailored to meet the needs and skill level of the individual rider.
